Book Review – Purify by Brian Robert Smith

Under the watchful eye of a crazy doctor? Purify is a drug that brings you back from the brink of death, but with a very heavy price indeed.

I’m going to be honest, I had a love hate relationship with this book. I did struggle to pick it up at times and therefore it’s taken me a little time to finish. However, once i got to reading, it wasn’t too bad. I feel that my problem was that I just could not relate to any of the characters. I did also find them to be quite flat and uninteresting.

Mason escaped from the crazy laboratory and went on the run from Dr Harlow. Yet I find it hard to believe, that if your trying to escape someone, why would you just go home? Surely that would be the first place someone would look? I find it very difficult to get to grips with his motives throughout this story as well; I just didn’t find it very believable. I felt a lot of the time, there was a lot of talking but not much going on. I think I actually disliked all of the characters in the book, none of them were very nice people. It’s hard to explain but this thriller just really didn’t do anything for me, I am genuinely really sorry to say.

I can say though, that the book is really well written, for a debut novel it was very good. I genuinely think we have great things to expect from this author and I look forward to reading anything new in future. It wasn’t bad, just not for me.

 

Another thing, I would rate this more as a horror then a thriller. I think the storyline got a little confused along the way and wandered into a different genre.

Book Review – Existence (Existence Trilogy 1) by Abbi Glines

2 Stars of Doom

OH MY GOD YOU HAVE TO BE KIDDING ME? I ran with this book trying to be forgiving, I kept telling myself not to be so spiteful and hateful toward it as I believed this was self published. I mean… if grammar was a living, breathing person, I’m pretty sure he would go and jump off a cliff after reading this. God knows i tried myself.

But really??? Someone read this and decided to publish it? I’m pretty sure the family cat could have done a better job at editing. For example… is it really necessary to say three times in a paragraph how someone’s eyes made her feel? There was just SO much waffle. If i was reading a paper copy i probably would have flicked ahead to see the impending misery which was the next couple of hours of my life.

Don’t even get me started on the characters names…. Pagan, Leif & Dank????? What the hell kind of name is that? It doesn’t say mysterious, sexy, intriguing or death … it makes him sounds like a problem you’d have at home with leaky pipes. “Honey, the pipes have burst, we have Dank in the basement again.”

So lets start on Pagan…. She’s a moany, whiney, selfish, bitchy waste of space. Through pretty much this whole book she’s seeing this guy called Leif, star quarterback and really good boyfriend, sweet, kind & thoughtful. Pagan decides she doesn’t love him and she only has eyes for Dank. However she decides to string him along for the whole story. She uses him to make herself feel better and the poor guy doesn’t have a clue. This is the same girl who actually has the gall to call another girl ‘Kendra’ the school slut? Pfft. At least she’s honest instead of trying to pretend she’s a timid, good little girl. Oh the pathetic little bint even does a stint in a mental hospital cos she loves basking in her messed up ego.

Leif was extremely dull, and had the personality of an out of date Jacobs cracker. If your gonna write in a ‘nice guy’ into a story at least make him likeable…

Dank? His name describes his character to a T!

Oh and this is a trilogy? SERIOUSLY? Someone read it and thought ‘whoopie lets make two more’. Talk about glutton for punishment… in fact, that must be what i am, as i will be reading the next book. Why? Because i simply wanna know what Leif is… really bad reason to waste a few hours of my life. Alas im a fool.

I was genuinely going to rate this as a 1* …I have only rated this as 2* due to the last 2 chapters. Its just a shame Pagan didn’t actually die and end of this selfish farce.

Anyway, thanks for reading what can only be called my 2* rant! Wait till you see a 1*!
