Book Review – Shiver (The Wolves of Mercy Falls, #1) by Maggie Stiefvater

There are many words to describe this book, non of them being ‘Exciting, Unique or Enthralling’ . I probably got to the last 6 pages before i felt any emotion at all toward any of the characters.

Blurb: When a local boy is killed by wolves, Grace’s small town becomes a place of fear and suspicion. But Grace can’t help being fascinated by the pack, and by one yellow-eyed wolf in particular. There’s something about him – something almost human. Then she meets a yellow-eyed boy whose familiarity takes her breath away…

A chilling love story that will have you hooked from the very first page.

So yes, this book was ‘Shiver’ the first in a three part series, ‘The Wolves of Mercy Falls’.

It follows Grace, a dull high-school student who’s only interest is watching the wolves in the forest behind her backyard. The same wolves infact which tried to maul her to death as a child, charming. Not bleak or weird at all *rolls eyes*. And if that wasn’t ‘Grade A’ messed up enough, our so called heroine is apparantly in love with one of the wolves. Not sure if its just me or not, but i find this a little, creepy? Considering at this point, she doesnt even know he can transform into a human.

I think its quite obvious from the offset that the writer isn’t completely teen savvy. We’ve been loaded up again with steriotypical teenager ‘types’. The nerd, the fashionista & the bitch (oh and not to forget the brooding female lead with no sense of humour).

But the main award goes to Sam, for being the worlds wettest and most sappy male protagonist. Everytime a Sam chapter came up i couldnt help but roll my eyes. Grace chapters = emo angst to a new degree & Sams = the bore and vomit inducing emotional factor. This leads my moaning nicely into my hate of this ‘insta-love’ relationship which was incredibly unbelieveable.  They both need to just get a grip, they were fawning all over each other at every avaliable opportunity.

There were some nice points in the book and it was well written hence the 2 1/2 star and not a 2, but if this level of sap spills over into book 2 i shall be burying it under my lawn. The romance was sweet… but not at the level it was served.  The wolves were also cool and i would have liked to of seen more of the back story.

I’ve officially been blown away. This book. . . is just, wow!

Ok, i just need to start off by saying that this certainly is NOT a normal love story, and most definitely not for the weak of heart.

When i first read the blurb i took the disclaimer as a challenge more than a warning and it made me want to read this even more… in fact im posting the disclaimer here as I don’t want to get into any trouble 😉

**DISCLAIMER** This is NOT your average romance. It’s a dark, gritty, sometimes erotic psychological thriller with a heavy emphasis on plot. It also contains elements of dominance and discipline with dubious consent, psychological conditioning, and mental manipulation. There’s also gunfire and violence. If any of this offends you, this may not be the book for you. Intended for mature audiences only.17670231

Ok so this book totally fucked with my brain, i just don’t know who i am anymore… what WAS that!! It was just about the craziest written ride I’ve ever been taken on in my life. It was just so violent, disturbing, psychotic!

The story follows a young girl named Taylor. Shes had a rough life, abandoned by her parents and left with her uncle and cousin, she’s grown up on the wrong side of the tracks. Shes awesome, and i came to utterly adore her character throughout the story. She was just so completely and utterly human that you just couldn’t help but love her. She had her flaws but she was so strong aswell, just a girl in love. unfortunately for her, her love interest was Sebastian. Don’t get me wrong, at first he was just amazing. A couple of things he said and did niggled me slightly but no ones perfect.

Then BAM!!!

We saw the other side of Sebastian… the murderous, controlling psycho side! The worst thing is, the story was also told from his perspective. So even thought he was completely maniacal and complicated we got to see how his mind actually ticked. This also meant I couldn’t hate him as much as i wanted to, because underneath all the outer bravado and mentalness, he had a venerable heart. I’m not excusing his crazy behaviour, but you get an in site into why he feels like that and you can’t always hate him for the terrible things he put Taylor through.

daisy_divider_2_by_16thsquadsanseki-d5iktep

All i will say is, if you decide to read this book, then be prepared. Theres a lot of crazy crap going down right here and unless you have the stomach for psychological torment on a ginormous sized scale, you might want to reconsider.

I would love to recommend this book, but i would pass it out along with a firm warning. 18+ readers only.

Also – a big thank you for the review copy of the book Adrianna 🙂

Book Review – Forever Fae (Forever Fae #1) by L.P. Dover

Fantasticle 4 Stars

Ok, this is the first fantasy romance I’ve read in AAAAAAAGES and I totally forgot just how much I loved them!!! I also read this book with my WONDERFUL *squeezy huggy* Book Buddy and reviewer extraordinaire, Miss Branwen *bows her into the room*. You can find her review of this book linked below.

Ok *cough* review-ish time *grins*

Forever Fae is a fantasy/romance novel about a Princess of the Summer Court in the land of the Fae (far-far-away). The lead character and said princess is named Calista. Shes a frickin awesome heroine and sex-betch who can just about kick anyone (or anything’s) butt.

17458729

Blurb: He leans down, lips parted, and then our lips connect……….We didn’t know that this one kiss has FOREVER changed the Land of the Fae.
According to the Prophecy proclaimed many years ago, Princess Calista of the Summer Court is destined to change the Land of the Fae from the evil determined to destroy it. Her powers are phenomenal, and she secretly trains for battle with her handsome warrior friend, Merrick, who unbeknownst to her protects her heart as well, in hopes of keeping it for himself. At least, until the seductive Prince Ryder attends the Guardian Ceremony and instantly sends a fire burning through her veins and a connection so deep they both discover a love above anything imaginable.
No one knows how Calista is destined to change the kingdoms, but there is one that does. He not only craves Calista’s power, but her body as well, and his goal is to steal her power, make her his Dark Queen, and take over the Land of the Fae.
Will the evil succeed in claiming Calista’s soul? Or will the two men that fight for her heart save her from despair, and help her fulfill her destiny to become what she was meant to be.

daisy_divider_2_by_16thsquadsanseki-d5iktep

So, the book starts when Calista turns 18 years old and is paired with her new guardian and best friend Merrick (WOOOO MERRICK I LOVE YOU *throws panty-ho’s*). Together they are blood bonded and he is trusted with the duty of protecting Calista for the rest of her life, it also helps that he’s madly in love with her. Then enters…dun, dun …..dunnnnnnnn, drop dead gorgeous Prince Ryder from the Winter Court. Of course he and Calista fall madly in love (awkward triangle emerging), under the watchful eye of their enemy Alasdair (how ominous!).

I have to say, this book thrilled and surprised me with its twists and turns… alas it even broke my heart at one point *sulks*. It truly is a novel which displays a great deal of love, happiness and sorrow. Though saying that, there were a lot of icky bits aswell. Yes, im talking about you evil wizard Alasdair. Oh god he was so creepy, i felt like washing myself repeatedly whenever he made an appearance.

I also loved how the story was told in turn by each of the main characters, it really gave you a good insight into their inner thoughts and feelings. This is SO important for a book for it to be successful, in my eyes. If you can’t love the characters, or create any kind of bond or emotion toward them, then how can you love the book. You need to know how they feel and see the inner battles and expressions come out and be displayed upon the pages in front of you. L.P. Dover really got this aspect 100% right and i could already tell from the first chapter i would love this book.

daisy_divider_2_by_16thsquadsanseki-d5iktep

Ok, so I mentioned a love triangle yes? Ok, before you start thinking “oh FFS not another one!!” ITS NOT THE SAME, STAY HERE, READ ON & TRUST ME!! This is different and if you give the book a chance you will totally see what I mean. Calista isn’t like other whiney heroines I don’t care to mention (*cough*sparkley vampires*cough*) she’s decisive and doesn’t string along the opposite sex, which is another reason why shes awesome 🙂 !

This was a refreshing change to the dull-ness of recent fantasy romance and totally deserves a 4-star rating!

Oh… yeah im meant to be critical about something arent I? … *thinks* …. OH YES!! That’s one gripe I had, the blurb stated this was an adult romance and most certainly was not a YA *wags finger*. However I didn’t think anything was that bad, in fact it could have been steamier. I can see you wouldn’t want a child reading this, but adult teens, I don’t see a problem 🙂 .. considering the book was about an adult teen 😛

Book Review – Water (Akasha Series 1) by Terra Harmony

Let me start by saying, this is NOT what i expected. Also, YOU can expect minor spoilers in this review, hopefully nothing too ground breaking however.

To be honest i started reading this book as i was in the mood for some YA cheese. I spotted it whilst surfing on Amazon, Book 1 – Water was being sold as a freebie which i found appealing.

I soon found this wasn’t what i was expecting at all…. it went from mildly boring moaning female lead to – holy crap she’s being raped by an inanimate object-!! This certainly was not the book i thought i picked up. The cover is beautiful, there’s no skirting that issue but that’s where the pretty ends. Things get shocking to say the least!

12755985

Ok, so lets start with the bluuuuurb:

Elemental powers in the palm of her hand…and it won’t be enough to save her. When Kaitlyn Alder is involuntarily introduced to a life of magic, she becomes part of an organization hell-bent on saving the Earth. Just as her new-found life holds promises of purpose, romance, and friendship, the organization divides and a rogue member holds Kaitlyn hostage. Now one of the most terrifying men the human race has to offer stands between her and Earth’s survival.

Its short snappy and to the point. When it mentions the ‘hell bent on saving the planet lark’, it’s not kidding… at some points during this story I felt like I was taking part in a lecture. I get the feeling that the author is a closet tree hugger aswell as an aspiring writer.

daisy_divider_2_by_16thsquadsanseki-d5iktep

Gripe number one, this book promised romance – if you can call what Kaitlyn and Micah have romance, I’d worry about your personal life. I’d maybe suggest you call the witness protection programme. At first Micah is all exotic and ‘look at me and my amazing eyes & im gonna snog your face off’ & then this quickly turns to ‘i need to train you and your magic, try not to suffocate while I try and rape you’ …. ick!! Seriously, when Kaitlyn had the chance, she should have high-tailed it outa there asap. Micah is supposed to be her ‘protector’, I’ve yet to see any real protecting. Even when his so-called brother tried to knife a picture into her back, he just brushed it off like she was being unnecessarily whiney. *rolls eyes*

I think if i had to pick the two best words to describe this book, its ‘Stockholm syndrome’. All in all the book was quite well written but there were some serious lulls, some of the explanations were unnecessary and it took the story nowhere. I think it maybe could have done with a little dumbing down on these parts and spiced up a little on the main story.

I feel Kaitlyn could have done with a little more maturity, the way she acts at times is very childish and i forget shes meant to be an adult -so to speak-. For example, some of the dialect is extremely inappropriate for someone who has just been (or is being) sexually abused. Which brings be to Shawn, I genuinely felt real emotion toward this guy, none of it good. He’s the guy who I believe brought the story to life more then any of the other characters. Honestly, he was vile! I do think he needed more of a back story however. There was no real drive as to why he would do what he did. Fair enough his girlfriend was killed, but why direct this anger toward Kaitlyn when she had nothing to do with it. The only real explanation that was given was ‘he wanted her powers’, but why this meant he needed to capture her and rape her *shrugs* what a freak show!

daisy_divider_2_by_16thsquadsanseki-d5iktep

So concept GOOD… delivery BAD.

This book wasn’t really for me but I’m sure there’s an audience out there for it. I didn’t like the mix of YA and psychological torment… i think a more clear genre should have been established from the start.

Poetry Review – Essence of a Dark Soul by Faye Cross

5 Beautiful Stars

Untitled
Ok, this is my first ever poetry review, so please bear with me on this. I’m not usually a fan, but the author herself and the beautiful cover artwork really drew me to this book. I’ve always had a soft spot for all things gothic and vampiric (not talking sparkly vampires here, if that’s your thing, I suggest you turn around now & NEVER return.) Uh, so yeah… I really wanted to give this a try 🙂 !

Ok the cover artwork can be seen below. I’m advised this was designed and created by an Artist named Gemma Newey at Dark Phreak Arts. I must say, she sure does have a talent for it! If I ever write a book myself I know where I’d be going for my covers!

17317170

Ok so I’ll start on the poetry now, as I say, I hope this format I’m going for is pleasing enough.

So I’ve started with the first poem, ‘Hallowed Heart

The words and feelings are expressed beautifully, the words really speak of a deep bound respect and love. Makes your skin go all tingley. I really also love the reference of ones heartbeat resembling the beat of butterfly wings 🙂

Right, here we have ‘Lustful Hunger

Oh wow ok… so i assume this poem is about someone being ravaged by a lusty vamp! I like the recollection of confusion mixed with fear and desire. No sparkly crap here, i like it! If you’re gonna be vampinated, this is the right way about it! Again some really deep cutting lyrics here, i can vision this as a song.

Next up is ‘Infinite Fantasy

This appears to be a mural to life’s long and endless struggles of death and hate. Indeed, are we meant to keep repeating ourselves, repeating our past and our mistakes for all eternity. Written beautifully and with such honesty, the sounds of one woman’s thoughts against the world.

The next ‘Eyes of Glass‘…..

Ok, my interpretation of this poem is as follows. An old lonely soul, forgotten and lost, finally finding its mate, its other half. This soul is new and full of life, breathing and living. A new soul. The poem expresses the feelings and contact as they meet and realise they are meant to be together. Very beautiful really.

Onwards to ‘Blackened Rose’

I’m getting the feeling that the cover of this book is set to represent this particular one. I feel that the person speaking is a being trapped in a never-ending world of life and death, blood and flesh. This person yearns for something more but is shunned to a life of loneliness. Such a strong sense of sadness is portrayed in the words.

daisy_divider_2_by_16thsquadsanseki-d5iktep

I would truly love to sit and review each poem individually, they are beautiful and heartfelt. If you could take a piece of artwork and transform it into words, it is exactly what you would find in this book. The words themselves are stained with emotion, love and pain. The author herself has bared her very soul and heart, it is beautiful.

I’m genuinely moved and i am driven with a need to find Ms Cross and wrap a massive warm hug around her shoulders.

I my favourite poem of all is entitled ‘Dark Winged Lover’ … It’s a story of true love and companionship, expressing the deepest possible connection between two people.

Thank you Faye for writing this and choosing to share it with the world. I hope it can touch other people as much as it has touched me ♥
